If ever a woman needed a firecracker tied to her derrière and set aloft, it’s Ronnie Hawthorn, Dave seethed silently as he drove home from the Independence Day gala. Why did she act so hot under the collar when he joshed about women and their wily ways? Wasn’t Tammi living proof there were manipulative females roaming at large—women who always demanded to have things done their way, on their schedule, at their convenience? Why did Ronnie seem to take his casual remarks so personally? And why did she run like a scared rabbit whenever he got physically close to her? Did she find the mere sight of him that repugnant?
Dave ground his truck into the next gear, barreling up the hill towards his cabin. As the scraping sounds of his beloved vehicle’s transmission faded away, he let loose with a string of colorful phrases. He’d be sure to send the repair bill to Ronnie.
“Damn! That woman is really getting under my skin.” He blew out a long, tense breath. Ronnie was indeed different from all the other women he had ever known. She was proud, capable, and not afraid to speak her mind. He both admired and hated her for it, for he always came off looking like the fool whenever she was around him. It wasn’t a role he was used to playing. After all, he was David M. Darden, CEO of Darden’s General Stores, a man who garnered respect from both his colleagues and his rivals in the industry. Why couldn’t he seem to earn her respect? Why did it hurt so much to think he may have lost it over a stupid comment or two?
Dave parked his truck around the side and entered his home through the back door. He threw his keys down on the kitchen table and headed straight for his room, where he collapsed with a loud sigh in the middle of his big, empty mattress. His new Fred Bear and Huckleberry the cat would be his bed companions tonight.
Who am I kidding? Dave thought. They’ve been my only bedroom companions for some time... Something—or maybe someone—had to give soon. Maybe he was going to have to bite the bullet and apologize, or else Ms. Ronnie Hawthorn might do more than slide away from him on a park bench—she might just slide right on out of his life.

“You won’t forget to bid on me, will you?”
Floyd Johnston had been hounding Ronnie for weeks now—in the shop, in town, at church, anywhere he saw her. Finally, she could stand it no longer, and broke down and acquiesced to his plan. After all, the money was going to a good cause. And she had a strong feeling Floyd’s date package wasn’t going to attract many bidders, either.
“Don’t worry, I won’t forget to bid on you,” Ronnie said, smiling kindly. She ushered the nervous hog farmer back to his seat of honor on the high school auditorium stage and hurriedly motioned for him to sit down.
